The Department of Material Engineering (KMI) focuses on modern research and education in the field of textiles and advanced materials. Our work bridges traditional expertise with the latest technologies – from studying the structure and properties of fibers to developing innovative SMART textiles.

Main areas of expertise:

  • Textile and special fibers – their structure, properties, and applications.
  • Textile metrology – measurement methods, data analysis, and predictive model development.
  • Textile-reinforced composites – geometry, thermal and mechanical properties, special inorganic fibers.
  • Data processing – modern methods of univariate and multivariate analysis, calibration, and regression.
  • Quality management in textiles – evaluation of performance, appearance, surface, and hand feel.
  • Chemical technologies – textile finishing and environmental aspects of production.
  • Advanced textile technologies – SMART materials, colorimetry, plasma, laser, ultrasound, and microwave treatments.
  • Historical techniques – application of traditional textile production and maintenance methods.

The department is equipped with extensive laboratory facilities supporting Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral education as well as cutting-edge research. Available laboratories include microscopy, spectrophotometry, image analysis, and facilities for measuring mechanical and electrical properties, as well as for applying modern physical methods of textile treatment.

The department also provides teaching in MATLAB programming and is involved in developing specialized software for processing experimental data and measurement results.
